Brag is a relatively easy gambling game and was extremely popular in the old west. A standard 52- card deck is used and a typical game involves 4-8 people. Three card and five card brag were the most popular, named thus because that is how many cards each player was dealt.

Rules of the House

Before the game starts, the players agree upon the starting bet, the minimum and maximum raises, if blind hands are allowed and if any wild cards are going to be used. Never show your cards, not even after you fold, unless you are called. Never let on what cards you have.

When a new hand is dealt, each player antes-up the opening bet. Play starts with the player to the left of the dealer. That player decides whether to play or quit. If he chooses to play, he must ante at least the minimum bet. Play moves to the left. You can play or quit at any stage of a hand, as long as there are other playersThe option to call (see another  player's cards) is only available when there are two players left, yourself and one other. To call you must pay double the stake. If the two player's hands are identical, the player who calls loses.

Ranks of the Hands

Pryle (prial)- Three cards of the same value.

In 3 card brag, the highest ranking pryle is three 3's. If playing 7 card brag, then three 7's is the highest ranking pryle. Both are then followed by three Aces, three Kings etc down to three 2's.

Running Flush - Three cards in numerical order all of the same suit. The highest ranking run is A, K, Q and the lowest is 3, 2, Ace.

Run - Three cards in numerical order suit doesn't matter. The highest ranking run is A, K, Q and the lowest is 3, 2, A.

Flush - Three cards of the same suit.

The highest card of the three determines the rank of the hand. An Ace, 4, 2 will beat a K, Q, 10.  If the highest cards are equal the second card determines the higher rank and so on.

Pair - Two cards of the same numerical value.

The highest ranking pair is a pair of Aces down to a pair of 2's.

High - No other combination.

Rank determined by the highest card, for example Ace high. If both 'high' cards are equal then the second determines rank and so on.
